In his words

Outwork the doubt

Confidence on skis comes from everything you do. What you did that morning. What you did before that feature. What you did in the pre-season.

I've had seasons where the skiing caught up with my body. Exhausted, beat up, knees sore by the end of the day. I hated it.

The gym is where I earn the feeling that I've put the work in. I carry that feeling into the start gate.

So I built the plan I wanted. It knows it's October, and it tells you why every movement is in there.

Four wins. Eight podiums. One world title.

I had my eyes on the title since I was seventeen. I knew I could do it. I didn't know when.

What it is for

Every session buys you something on the hill.

Every movement in the plan has to answer to the mountain, whether that means a cliff in Verbier or the bumps under the chair. Here is what five of them buy you.

  1. In the gym

    Trap bar jumps

    01Heavy, then explosive

    On the hill

    Pop harder. Land solid.

The spring off a mogul and the stomp at the bottom of a roller come from the same place. Heavy weight, moved fast.

“Pop like you're going for the biggest cliff of your life. Stomp like you're landing it.”
    Marcus Goguen
  2. In the gym

    Snap downs

    02Landing work

    On the hill

    Absorb fast. Stay quick.

A bump line at speed is a hundred small landings in a row. Train the catch and your legs soak up each one, already set for the next turn.

“You jump over bumps and compressions without a thought, and shift your feet sideways to get away from a hazard.”
    Marcus Goguen
  3. In the gym

    Rotation punch

    03Core and anti-rotation

    On the hill

    Stay square in the chop.

Afternoon crud and firm bumps try to twist you sideways. A strong trunk keeps your shoulders down the hill and pulls you forward when you get thrown back.

“It holds you against everything the mountain throws at you sideways. And if you do backslap, it brings you right back up.”
    Marcus Goguen
  4. In the gym

    Deadlifts

    04Hamstrings and glutes

    On the hill

    The back shock.

Every bump you swallow folds you at the hips. Strong hamstrings and glutes hold you there instead of dumping you in the backseat, so the next turn starts strong.

“Think of a bike. Your legs are the front forks. Your hamstrings and glutes are the back shock.”
    Marcus Goguen
  5. In the gym

    Push press

    05Upper body and grip

    On the hill

    Armour.

Everyone falls. A strong upper body is the difference between getting up laughing and a season on the couch. It lets you train your legs harder, too.

“You may want to skip the upper body. You will regret it the day a shoulder takes you out for weeks.”
    Marcus Goguen

Your last lap should feel like your first.

The one nobody trains for

I've had to track up the mountain through waist deep snow to reach a friend in a tree well. Every time, I felt I couldn't get there fast enough.

That is what the cardio is for.

The night before a big day

You have put in the work. There is nothing to doubt.

Put a smile on your face and be grateful for every part of this life on skis.
